Chefs are today’s ultimate rockstars. Not only because they often sport some of the snazziest collections of tattoos and Anthony Bourdain is the king whose loss the internet can't get over, but their magnetic personalities, evident in every bite of their dishes, are worthy of a cult following.
And as true rockstars, many of these culinary wizards embody the free-spirited wanderlust, flocking from one kitchen, city, country, continent to another. They're worth your attention, and their culinary creations are definitely worth traveling for.
Julie Caute, founder of Dame Jane Résidence and a seasoned traveling chef, captures the essence of being a nomadic chef: “It’s about mixing and adapting your culture with the one you’re visiting.” While cooking elsewhere requires “a high degree of adaptability and humility,” she believes this cross-cultural exchange is the recipe for creativity. As chefs encounter new audiences, products, tools, and teams, it helps define their culinary identity, which is harder to achieve when sticking to one place and the same customers.
For the chef Francesco Sarvonio it’s the lifestyle that “combines the things I love the most – traveling, cooking, and meeting new people. I wish I started earlier.”
